Doge the Almighty
In this article I will explain to you about Doge.
How Doge began
- The original dog is called Kabosu, a female Shiba Inu who was rescued from a puppy mill, adopted in 2008 by teacher Atsuko Sato, and named after a Japanese citrus fruit
- On February 23, 2010, Sato posted several photos of Kabosu on her personal blog. One specific photo showed Kabosu with her paws crossed, glaring sideways at the camera with raised eyebrows.
How Doge became famous
- The photo began spreading on Tumblr (“Shiba Confessions”) and Reddit around 2010,, with users adding broken English captions.
- The meme uses multicolored text in the Comic Sans font, representing funny thoughts such as: “much wow,” “so concern,” “such noble,” and “very doge”.
- The meme reached peak popularity in 2013, with 4chan users spamming the image on Reddit’s r/MURICA subreddit in August 2013, solidifying its status. Know Your Meme named it the “top meme” of 2013.
How Doge evolved over time
- In December 2013, software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer created “Dogecoin” as a joke, featuring Kabosu’s face to poke fun at the intense speculation in the cryptocurrency market.
- In 2020, Doge was voted the best meme of the 2010s on a Know Your Meme poll.
- Around 2016, the meme evolved into “ironic Doge” memes, which often feature surreal or darker humor on platforms like Reddit’s /r/dogelore, featuring related characters like “Cheems”.
- The original dog, Kabosu, passed away in May 2024 at the age of 18.
