Artists Explained Part 3 :Diego Velazquez- The First Great Spanish Painter…

The year is 1599 and a boy who has a passion for art is born. Diego Velazquez, whom I am going to just call Diego for the rest of the article, had an interest in the arts by a young age and often painted pictures of his family. When he was 19, after studying art he painted the painting Old Woman Frying Eggs. Here is the painting>

This was just one of many of his most famous paintings. But it seemed after this painting he didn’t get any more success. Until his artwork The Triumph of Bacchus painted in 1628, 9 years later.

A fun fact is that he was the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal.

It was in that same courtroom he painted his true masterpiece Las Meninas in 1656 as shown below.

He unfortunately died 4 years later in 1660 aged 61.
