Anglo-Saxon Day
Last Friday, 31st Janauary, Year 5 had Anglo-Saxon day.
We did lots of different activities to learn about what life was like for Anglo-Saxons. We did: cooking, weaving, making brooches and writing in runes.
Cooking:
We made Anglo-Saxon bread and some soup. The bread was really nice and tasty. It was just made of flour and water. We had to mix it and make it into a dough. Then we made the dough flat so could cook quickly. Then we put it into a pan. When it was goldenish we took it out because it was done. We took it out before it got burnt. It was really yummy!
The soup (called ‘Briw’) was made of: beans, cabbage, carrots, onions and leeks which gardening club had grown. There were no potatoes or tomatoes because the Anglo-Saxons didn’t have these.
Brooches:
Anglo-Saxon clothes didn’t have zips or buttons. They used brooches to hold their clothes together. We made some brooches using tin foil, card, string and gems to decorate them.
Runes:
Runes are Anglo-Saxon letters. They are all straight lines because they are easier to carve than curved ones. I had a go writing in runes. I wrote to Sophie saying, “Can I play with you on Monday?”.
Wow, Zara! What a lovely article! It certainly looks as if you enjoyed your cooking!
