All about Hockey

This article is about the positions in field hockey. I have played hockey for Ashford Hockey Club for a long time and my daddy has played for England under 21s (he’s 42 now though and he still play’s). I thought I would share with you some more information about hockey.

You have players set up in a particular format and you stay in them. There are defenders, mid-fielders, attackers, and a goalkeeper (a goalie for short). There are initials for each position. These are:

  • RW (right wing)
  • LW (left wing)
  • CF (centre forward)
  • IL (inside left)
  • IR (inside right)
  • RH (right half)
  • LH (left half)
  • CH (centre half)
  • FB (full back)
  • GK (goalkeeper there is only one goalkeeper)

I have added a picture of a pitch to show where players stand to start the match.

A goalie plays in goal and tries to keep the balls from going in the goal. A defender has to help the goalie but stays in the D they can go on top of the D though. A midfielder can run anywhere on the pitch but not in goal. An attacker can go in the opponents D but not go behind into their half of the pitch.

I usually play either LH, RH or CH. I enjoy all of the positions as you can score goals in all of them and run around A LOT!

I really enjoy playing hockey because it is really fun, keeps me fit, it is a great team sport and I have made lots of friends. My sister also plays hockey and loves it too!

I have also recently competed in the Kent Championships with my team (Ashford Hockey Club, Boys under 10s) and………. WE WON!!! I got a medal and we will be competing again soon in the Regional Championship. It was such fun!

Why don’t you give it a try?

If you have any questions about hockey you can always come and find me at play time and ask 😊

That is the end of my article thank you for reading it, have a nice day!
